UTM tagging best practices
Since X Ads do not support dynamic UTM parameters, you need to manually enter the campaign and ad group names as tracking parameters into the website URL of your promoted post. This manual entry is necessary for SegmentStream to attribute ad platform clicks to sessions on your website accurately.
Follow these steps to apply the tracking parameters:
- Go to your Ads Manager, and click on the Ad groups tab.
- Locate the ad group you want to track and make note of the values of the Ad Group name and Campaign Name dimensions.
- Use a URL encoder for the values. For example, the ad group name
New Event
becomesNew%20Event
, and the campaign nameOffers [04/24]
becomesOffers%20%5B04%2F24%5D
.
- Click on the more options icon next to your ad group name and click Edit ad group.
- Navigate to every ad within the ad group and edit their Website URL field.
- Make sure it contains the parameters
utm_campaign
andutm_term
, which will be equal to the encoded values of campaign name and ad group name respectively.
- For example, for the ad group shown above, the full URL would be:
plain texthttps://segmentstream.com?utm_source=x&utm_medium=paid-social&utm_campaign=Offers%20%5B04%2F24%5D&utm_term=New%20Event
Once the parameters are implemented, sessions will be stitched with costs down to the ad group granularity, and the Campaign and Ad Group dimensions of the SegmentStream reports will display the X Ads campaign name and ad group name, respectively.
